Types of vapes: disposables, pod systems, kits and e-liquid

What are the different types of vapes?

This catalogue tracks four kinds of vape listing: disposable vapes, pod systems, e-liquid and vape hardware — 8,764 listings in total, last checked October 15, 2026. Each is defined below by what it physically is and how it is used.

FormatListingsMedian priceMost common stated capacity

Disposable vapes

A disposable vape is sold already filled with e-liquid and is not designed to be refilled. Some models have a sealed, non-rechargeable battery; others include a charging port (commonly USB-C) so the battery can be topped up, but the device itself still cannot be refilled. Once its e-liquid runs out, the whole unit is discarded and replaced with a new one.

2,649 listings, median price $33.05, last checked October 15, 2026. Listings stating a capacity claim a median of 20 mL — also the single most commonly stated figure. See disposable vapes for current listings, and how much e-liquid is in a pod or a disposable vape for the full capacity and puff-count data.

Pod systems

A pod system is a reusable device holding a removable e-liquid reservoir called a pod. Some pods are sold prefilled with e-liquid and discarded once used up, the same way a disposable is; others are sold empty and refilled from a separate e-liquid bottle. “Prefilled” and “refillable” describe which one a given pod is. “Open system” and “closed system” — describing whether a device accepts e-liquid or pods from any source or only the manufacturer’s own — are industry terms not defined in Canadian law. All four terms are used here only as the catalogue’s own listings use them.

2,614 listings, median price $21.99, last checked October 15, 2026. Listings stating a capacity are most commonly 2 mL (73 listings) or 20 mL (97 listings) or 30 mL (65 listings) or 40 mL (37 listings)— often the empty pod’s holding capacity rather than e-liquid included in the price. See pod systems for current listings, and how much e-liquid is in a pod or a disposable vape for why a stated pod capacity is not always e-liquid you receive.

Mods, tanks and other vape hardware

This catalogue groups reusable devices and their parts — mods, tanks, batteries, coils and replacement parts — sold apart from any e-liquid, under a single Hardware category. A mod or tank kit is bought once (or occasionally, for a replacement part) and paired with e-liquid purchased separately, rather than a sealed, prefilled pod.

1,608 listings, median price $17.99, last checked October 15, 2026. See vape hardware for current listings.

E-liquid bottles

E-liquid is the liquid used in a refillable device, sold by the bottle separately from any device, for refilling a tank or an empty pod. It is not always a nicotine liquid — nicotine-free e-liquid is also sold — and Canada caps nicotine concentration, where present, at 20 mg/mL regardless of bottle size — see nicotine strength: what mg/mL and percentages mean. It is also sold formulated as nicotine salt or freebase, two trade terms for two different chemical forms of the same nicotine; see nicotine salt and freebase e-liquid: what the labels mean.

1,893 listings, median price $24.99, last checked October 15, 2026. The most commonly stated bottle size is 30 mL, across 713 listings, priced at a median of $0.83 per mL. See e-liquid for current listings, and e-liquid bottle sizes: cost per millilitre by size for every stated size the catalogue tracks.

How these numbers were built

Listing counts and median prices come from every currently tracked listing in each of the catalogue’s four categories. Stated capacities are read from a listing’s own title text, the same method used throughout this cluster — see pod and disposable capacity and e-liquid bottle sizes for the exact rules each figure follows.

Common questions

How many kinds of vape does this catalogue track, and how many listings does each have?

Four kinds: Disposable vapes (2,649), Pod systems (2,614), E-liquid (1,893), Vape hardware (1,608) — 8,764 listings in total, last checked October 15, 2026.

What is the difference between a disposable vape and a pod system?

A disposable vape is sold already filled with e-liquid and is not designed to be refilled: once its e-liquid runs out, the whole unit is discarded and replaced. A pod system is a reusable device with a separate, removable e-liquid reservoir called a pod; the device itself is kept, and only the pod is replaced or refilled.

What is the difference between a prefilled and a refillable pod?

A prefilled pod is sold already containing e-liquid and discarded once it is used up. A refillable pod is sold empty and filled from a separate e-liquid bottle, then reused. Both are sold under the same 'pod system' catalogue category.

What do 'open system' and 'closed system' mean for a vape device?

Both are industry terms, not defined in Canadian law. An open-system device accepts e-liquid from any bottle or refillable pod a buyer chooses. A closed-system device is designed to work only with the manufacturer's own prefilled pods or cartridges.

Can a disposable vape be recharged?

Some can. A disposable is always sold already filled with e-liquid and is not designed to be refilled, but its battery is a separate question: some models have a sealed, non-rechargeable battery, while others include a charging port (commonly USB-C) so the battery can be topped up. Either way, once the e-liquid runs out the whole unit is discarded and replaced, not refilled.
